October 14: Carpooling Trip to Raab Park—A Look
at a 19th Century Iron Mine
Nixon Park, 10 a.m.–12 noon
This 15-minute ride and 1.5-mile hike will examine the remains of the York
Iron Company Mine. See foundations, waste piles and pits that once removed
the iron ore. Learn how bats use the mine shafts for hibernation homes in
the winter. Recommended for ages 8 and older. NF, but pre-registration is

October 14: York College of Pennsylvania Geology
Stations
Nixon Park, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
All levels of boy and girl scouts can complete badge work and families are
invited to attend these short, educational stations to learn more about our
Earth. Receive free samples and maps and learn to read a compass. NF,

October 14: Fox Story Time: “Old Big Bones”
Nixon Park, 11 a.m.–12 noon
Designed for children ages 4-7, the story will talk about how a dinosaur
bone was discovered. After the story, a dinosaur puzzle will be put together
and children will have the opportunity to have their photo taken with a
T-rex or super-duper mineral crystal. $5 per child, please call 428-1961

October 14: How To Get Started in Becoming a
Rockhound?
Nixon Park, 12:30–1:15 p.m.
With Tom Smith of the Franklin County Rock & Mineral Club. This program will
show you the basic and advanced tools in collecting fossils and minerals.
This program will also tell you what to do with the finds after returning
home. Recommended for ages 8 and older. NF, NPR.
October 14: Where Can You Find Minerals
and Fossils?

Join Central Pennsylvania Rock and Mineral Club member Ed Charles to learn
where certain minerals and fossils are found in Pennsylvania. Many specimens
will be shared during this program. Recommended for ages 8 and older. NF,

Nixon Park, 3–3:45 p.m.
Join Parks Special Events Coordinator Jeri Jones in looking at the Earth
through a geologist’s eyes. An assortment of activities will be completed
with audience participation dealing with minerals, fossils, volcanoes and

October 15: The Sinkhole that Ate York County
Nixon Park, 1–1:45 p.m.
William Kochanov, Geologist for the Pennsylvania Topographic and Geologic
Survey, will discuss how sinkholes and caves form. This program will also
include where sinkholes and caves are located within York County. Their
hazards will also be discussed. Recommended for ages 10 and older. NF,

October 15: Cool Geologic Sites in Adams,
Lancaster and York Counties
Nixon Park, 3–3:45 p.m.
Join Parks Special Events Coordinator Jeri Jones on a tour of some of the
fascinating sites in the region. This Power Point program will visit the
three counties and show locations that you can visit to study its geology.

October 15: Historic Wallace-Cross Mill Tour &
Cider Fest
Wallace-Cross Mill, 1–4 p.m.
Join Friends of Wallace-Cross Mill docents at the mill to learn about this
mid 1800s mill and taste the flavor of autumn—apple cider. Tours are free,
there is a nominal fee to purchase apple cider. NPR.

October 18–20: Fall Senior Excursions
Seven Valleys Fire Company Parking Area, 10 a.m., 12 noon, 2
p.m. (Friday Special Twilight Ride at 5 p.m.)
Take a 7-mile round-trip ride on the Rail Trail using the “People-Mover”
towed by a truck. Parks Special Event Coordinator Jeri Jones will narrate
historical and nature facts. The trip will pass through historic Howard
Tunnel. Also take a side trip on your own before or after your excursion to
Hanover Junction Train Station for a look at the local Civil War history.

October 21: Raptors Rising
Rocky Ridge Park, Oak Timbers Parking Lot, North Overlook, 9
a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Late October offers a great variety of species and the possibility of rarer
species like Red-shouldered hawks and maybe a Golden Eagle. Join local hawk
watcher Phil Keener for a breath of crisp fall air and migrating hawks while
learning basic identification and facts about many species. Bring
binoculars, lawn chair and field guides, and dress for the weather. NF,

October 21: Outdoor Watercolor Class
Nixon Park, 12:30–2:30 p.m.
Artist Teanna Byerts will demonstrate and teach how easy it is to create
wonderful landscapes using watercolors. Anyone age 9 and up can join the

October 22: Fall Foliage Frolic

Take an afternoon hike with forester and park volunteer Bill Greenawalt and
unlock the mysteries of fall colors. Also, learn about the lives and history

October 28: Haunted Stories at the Station
Hanover Junction Train Station, Rail Trail Park, 7–8:30 p.m.
Come to take a self-guided tour of the historic train station and then
listen to train-related ghost stories on the lawn. You never know what
spirits may be stirring at this time of year. Bring a blanket or lawn chair

October 28: YCAS Sky Show and Public Star Watch
Rudy Park, 7–9:30 p.m.
These shows will teach the basics of using star charts and tell some of the
fascinating mythology and stories that are associated with the stars and
constellations visible in the evening sky. Learn how to find your way around
the nighttime sky and find interesting objects. The Sky Show will be held
rain or shine. Following the presentation, look at featured objects through
various telescopes and binoculars. The Public Star Watch portion will only
be held if skies are partly cloudy to clear. NF, NPR.
